Made a bunch of graphic banners for EON Comics and I thought of sharing them here with you.

The characters featured in the various graphic links are Riot Grrlz, Passing By, and The Way.

“Riot Grrlz” was created by Jac Ting Lim and myself, “Passing By” is a collaboration between Ariel Atienza and me, and “The Way” is my very own brainfart (as Elbert succulently puts it).

One of the most often asked questions I get from guy friends is this:

“Jonas, (insert name of prospective lady love here) doesn’t answer my (text message, e-mail, phone calls, etc.). What does it mean?”

Fellas, take a hint.

If the girl refuses to communicate with you, it can mean either one (or all) of several reasons.

1. You have done something to offend your prospective lady love and she’s waiting for you to realize it and offer a word of apology.

2. She’s not interested in you so better cut your losses and quit now before you embarrass yourself any further.

3. She’s either somewhere far away where she doesn’t have access to any modes of communication or she’s dead.

In this day and age, it’s the rare girl indeed who plays hard to get by severing the lines of communication. Believe me, if a girl likes you, they will make themselves available.

But if your situation is unique and after much brainstorming and soul searching you are still left without a clue, it will be better to just go ahead and ask directly if there is something wrong.

Running on assumptions will not do you any good. Better to confirm and get it straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.

Assumptions are the mother of all fuck-ups.

“She doesn’t answer my phone calls. What does it mean?”

“It’s a sign” I answer and walk away to let a friend who asked me the question to contemplate one of the universe’s mysteries.

Classic Lines Girls Say

Hey there, folks! Jonas here. Thought you may get a kick of this article. I wrote about it about early first quarter of this year for my other blog. Enjoy!

We’ve all heard these lines before (us guys and the few girls who actually had the guts to court a guy). I suck at the dating game and even more so when I was still in high school. I must’ve been turned down by every girl I ever courted and, consequently, gone through most of the turn-down lines ever invented by the female of the species.

So, without much further ado, I list them down. Feel free to add your own if I happened to miss a few.

For all the guys out there who ever courted a girl and got turned down, this is for you.

1. I love you as a friend/I think we’re better off as friends

This one’s a classic. All the guys alive who ever attempted courting the girl of their dreams must’ve heard this one at one point or the other. Condolences to those who’ve had the misfortune of hearing it more than once.

This usually means that the girl likes you enough to try and remain friends even though you already attempted to up the stakes and take your friendship to the next level.

Consider yourself lucky that you’ll be able to walk away with some dignity intact.

2. It’s not you…it’s me/You’re just too good for me

Another classic but a bit worse than “I love you as a friend” line.

The girl is trying to cushion your ego so it won’t hurt as much but at the same time she’s insulting your intelligence. “It’s not you…it’s me”!? I mean, c’mon!

On the other hand the girl may have a serious inferiority complex and could actually think that you are actually too good for her. In which case this could be a bit of a good news disguised as bad news.

She actually thinks that much of you which could mean that the fat lady hasn’t sung her final song yet.

3. I’m too young to get a boyfriend/ I’m prioritizing my studies

These lines are usually used by girls still in high school…right before you catch them with the campus hunk making out behind the chapel!

4. Now’s not the right time

She really doesn’t like you but don’t care enough or to couldn’t think of a better excuse. Unless, of course, a family member just died and she’s in the middle of mourning or she’s recovering from chemotherapy or a major operation.

In which case, it might not really be the greatest time to profess your intent for something more than friendship.

5. It just wouldn’t work out between us because (insert reason/excuse here)

At least the one who says this line bothered to think of something good for you. She respects you as a human being, at least, so be glad.

6. I’m in love with someone else

Er…at least she was honest. Now wipe your tears, pick up your heart from the floor, and put away that knife before you hurt someone (especially yourself).

7. A good friend of mine is in love with you and I can’t jeopardize our friendship

Out of all the lines in this list this is the one I hate the most.

Years ago, in high school, I courted this girl that I really, REALLY, liked. I actually thought it was going somewhere. She like me a lot, her parents liked me a lot, but sadly her friend liked me a lot too.

And it was a no-go because of that.

There’s more of course but they’re, basically, variations on these 7 lines but if you encountered new ones feel free to post them. I’d love to know how the ladies are turning down the boys nowadays in this day and age.

That goes out for the ladies as well.

Inking is a Riot

I'm currently hard at work finishing the current batch of Riot Girls comic strip. But just so you guys have something new to look at while you’re waiting I'm giving you a quick peek at what I'm doing with the girls right now (that doesn’t sound so good).

Here’s the rough penciled strip. I pencil using a Hi-Tenik 570 Clutch Pencil with HB lead with a Steadler eraser handy.

Here’s the inked version. I use a Pentel Brush Pen for most of the line work with a 2.0 UNIPIN Technical Pen for some details.

After which, the strip goes to Photoshop for clean up and lettering.

The Riot Grrlz! is a girl group punk rock band conceptualized by myself and character designs by Jac Ting Lim. Here's the original design for Vivian, Victoria, Stephanie, and Ada.

The Riot Grrlz! is going to be a twice a week web comic (every Tuesday and Fridays). We'll be launching the strip formally next week so be here then for your regular dose of comic book goodness.
